Quick cute crochet vase

P1030022

My son brought home a beautiful flower from the flower store. It kind of looked like a snowflake to me, although my heart melted :-). But….I didn’t have a vase in the right size…so what to do?

I decided to upgrade a little empty jar with yarn.

Last week I was in my favourite yarn store (Wol en Wol) and bought some gray Schachenmayr soft & easy originals low pill acrylic yarn, color 00092. I’d never used it before, so this was the perfect little project to try this yarn. And because blue is my sons favourite colour I added a touch of blue too. The yarn I used for this was Scheepjes Colour Crafter, Urk (a light blue).

The jar I used is 12 cm (4.5 inches) high, and has a circumference of 20.5 cm (8 inches).

For a jar of similar size you need:
– approximately 25gr of Schachenmayr soft & easy (00092)
– a left over of Scheepjes Colour Crafter, Urk
– a 3 mm hook (D for US and 3/0 or 000 or 11 for UK)
– a 4 mm hook (F for US and 8 for UK)

  1. Start with a magic loop and a 4 mm hook in the gray Schachenmayr yarn.
  2. 12 halve double crochets (UK: htc) in the loop, close with a slip stitch (12 st), chain 2.
  3. 2 halve double crochets in every stitch, close with a slip stitch (24 st), chain 2.
  4.  *1 halve double crochet in the next three stitches,  two halve double crochets in the fourth stitch*, repeat *-* until end of row,  close with a slip stitch (38 st), chain 2.
  5. halve double crochet in the back loop of every stitch, close with a slip stitch (38 st), chain 2.
  6. halve double crochet in every stitch, close with a slip stitch (38 st), chain
  7. The diameter of my jar slightly increased at this point, so I had to increase a few stitches: *1 halve double crochet in the next 5 stitches, two halve double crochets in the sixth stitch*, repeat from *-* until there are two stitches left, halve double crochet in the last two stitches, close with a slip stitch (44 st), chain 1, change to the 3 mm hook.
  8. *1 single crochet in the first stitch, chain 3 and skip the next three stitches, 1 single crochet*, repeat from *-* until end of the row, close with a slip stitch, chain 3.
  9. four double crochets in every chain 3-loop of the previous row, close with a slip stitch, chain 1.
  10. repeat row 8.
  11. repeat row 9 and after the last (slip) stitch switch to 4 mm hook and change colour to the Scheepjes Colour Crafter yarn (Urk, light blue), chain 1.
  12. 1 single crochet in every stitch, close with a slip stitch, chain 3.
  13. *1 double crochet in the next three stitches, one double crochet in the fourth stitch, then yarn over and pull up yarn around the fourth double crochet, repeat two more times. Now you have 7 loops of yarn on your hook. yarn over and pull the yarn through the first 6 loops, yarn over and pull the yarn trough the two remaining loops, skip one stitch*, repeat from *-* until the end of the row, close with a slip stitch, chain 1.
  14. skip the first stitch, 1 single crochet in every stitch, close with a slip stitch and change colour (back to the gray Schachenmayr) and change to the 3 mm hook, chain 1.
  15. repeat row 8-10.
  16. repeat row 9.
  17. *1 single crochet in the first stitch, chain 3 and skip the next three stitches, 1 single crochet*, repeat from *-* until end of the row, close with a slip stitch, change to 4 mm hook and chain 2.
  18. 1 halve double crochet in every chain 3-loop until end of row, close with a slip stitch, chain 2.
  19. 1 halve double crochet in every stitch. close with a slip stitch, chain 2.
  20. *1 halve double crochet in the next three stitches, 1 halve double crochet in the 4th and the 5th stitch together (decrease one stitch)*, repeat *-* until the last two stitches. one double crochet in each of the last two stitches, close with a slip stitch (33 st), chain 2.
  21. 1 halve double crochet in every stitch, close with a slip stitch. Weave in ends.
  22. Gently pull the cover over the empty jar.

Enjoy!

I really liked the look and feel of the Schachenmayr yarn (no affiliate links!), it has a quite smooth and soft touch. Sometimes the threads (5 ply) came apart, which makes it a little more difficult to crochet with if you are an absolute beginner. I’ll definitely use it for more projects…I’m already thinking of a next pattern, ….maybe a scarf.

Love,
